long range rifle recommendations

Are we talking calibers or specific rifle models? 270 and 30-06 are great game getters - but expect to spend $ for hi grade ammo (which pretty much applies to any caliber when you need 600 years plus).

Winchester Model 70, Savage, and Rem 700 with Timney trigger will serve the task

All kinds of ways to achieve this, just depends what you want to spend. As far as cartridge, something between 25 and 28 cal. Next if you'll experiment and hand load you can file that group size down. Use boat tail match grade bullets in a heavy weight. Rifle, a good ole Remmington 700, Sako or Winchester model 70 or the like. Then you could take that rifle to the next level by accurizing it. Match grade, bull barrel, glass bed and trigger job. Make sure to get the proper twist to match the bullet you want to shoot. Then you need a good scope to top it off with like a Leupold VX 3 or better with an adjustable AO. If you can do your part, you would have a fine rifle. Cheapest way I know to get a rifle is to get a good deal on a used custom built rifle. You start shooting something like this, you ain't going back. There are lots of combinations you can go to achieve what you want

So in resurrecting this thread, if I wanted an entry-level long range rifle, Ruger American in .308 wouldn't be a bad start? Did I understand all this correctly?
If you're doing much shooting at all past 500 I would highly recommend 6.5CM over .308. It retains more energy at distance and is a more accurate round due to its ballistic coefficient. I shot PRS out in the windy midwest states where 400 was the shortest lanes other than the one-off novelty lanes and the bulk of shooting was between 700 and 900. A few people showed up with .308 and they always struggled compared to the guys shooting the heavy for caliber space technology BC guns like the 6.5CM, Dasher, AI, 6CM and the like.

The Creedmoor is a good toe in the water on stuff like this because it's still a plenty capable sporting round, especially in GA, with tons of market support now but also plenty of room to hand load and really tune your gun in too.

...if you can find components, anyway. I'm still looking for primers and IMR 4350.
