Look at a Remington 770. Bought my son one several years ago, he hunted with it and killed a few deer with it. Not a top of the line rifle but descent for the money.

300 is just as good as 1000 if you know how to use it. I like savage axis with a Nikon bdc.

Very few people can shoot as good as their rifles are capable. People swear by the savage as a good, accurate budget rifles. Personally, I own a Remington 770 in. 243 & it shoots lights out. You can absolutely find a good used rifle for $300, but to do it in the caliber you're looking for, it will require patience. People love their. 308s.
