I have TDS internet and pay for 1gig service in to the house. I took their cable and went straight in from their box and get 900+ meg download and about 650+ meg upload. Service to the house is good.

Normal setup is from their box to our router about 40 feet away on the other side of a wall. The router is a tp-link WIFI 6. My desktop computer connects wirelessly to the router about 40 feet away and the speed test shows 200-300 up and down. The weird thing is, if I take the router and hook a 3' cable to the router and sit the router right next to my computer the speed actually drops to between 100 to 200 so it's worse sitting 2' from my computer??

Any help is appreciated

i don't have experience with tds boxes, but im assuming they are like everyone else now where they have wireless built in and 4 Ethernet ports. they are "all in ones", meaning its a modem/router combo. if it is, they do not like routers after them unless set up for it. i believe you have to turn the wireless off on the main box and maybe change to a static ip, not sure. im not nerdy enough to remember the fix to make it work lol. its been a few years lol. you also have to take into account the wireless card on your desktop may not support those speeds over wireless.

what speed do you get when you connect wireless to their box?

Try a different cat 6 cable first and then trash that TP link router if no improvement. I'd go with a Netgear or Ubiquity.

Wifi 5 is limited to about 500 mbps on its best day.

Wifi 6 can theoretically handle 800 or so.

However, the 2.4 ghz band is limited to about 450 or so, and the 5 ghz can hit 1300 or so....

A lot of older routers topped out at 54, so you are still getting great speeds.

A dedicated router is usually faster than one of those all in one units.

It could be a lot of things that are impacting it. Can you give any more detail on the current set up?

- When you go straight in to the "TDS box" what kind of device is that? make and model? Is it a seperate device like your TP Link or is it the device attached to the wall that connects to the fiber from the outside.
- How does your TP Link connect to the TDS network? I see "40 feet away on the other side of the wall". Is it wired directly to the device or is it connected wirelessly? If wired is it through a wall jack from existing network cable or a cable ran on the floor?
- Can you provide the model of the TP Link?
- I would also be curious about your PC. You mentioned getting a new "wifi card" for it. Can you give anymore details on that? Make and model?
- What made you test the speed? What were you doing at your PC that made you think it was slower that the 1G?
- How old is the PC?
- What test did you use to check the speed?

A lot of your answer will depend on configurations and how both the TDS and TP Link networks are set up. There are a lot of variables that impact speed so sometimes it takes troubleshooting and time to resolve issues.

If it were me here is what my troubleshooting steps would be...start fresh and forget previous tests. There was probably a few Ethernet cables that came with the TP Link or the TDS solution. I would start with thoses and not test with anything longer than three feet.

- move the PC and connect it directly to the TDS box. Test and record speed. I would test 3 times just to see an average.
- If you have more than one "short" Ethernet cable then I would test with several just to confirm that they are all working the same and one is not having issues. If they are indeed getting the same results then use the same one for all of your test.
- After you have the cable identified and the results of the TDS test move the TP Link device next to the TDS device and connect with one of the Ethernet cables. Pay attention to how they are plugged up today so you can reconnect them the same way.
- Connect your PC to the TP Link and then do the same tests as before and document the results.
- This next step will depend on how your house is set up - if you have a 40 foot cable that runs to the TP Link normally then take that cable and connect it between the TP Link and the TDS box and test.

I have a feeling with everything "working" as is today then it is not likely a wire or cable issue. Those usually present as an all or nothing thing, however it still has to be tested and ruled out.

With your wired test results do you see where it changed? Could go on, but will stop and see if this helps.
