Looking to travel out west in October. I’d like to take my pistol and maybe a rifle if I’m lucky enough to find an event or range. But at least my carry pistol.

I’ve never flown with one before and I’m wondering the best way, they right box, the right way to declare, etc.

Thanks in advance

Just don’t open carry….

J/K.. TSA approved locks on all points.. Declare to your carrier. Special TSA Drop to open they review weapon is unloaded and no ammo in same case. PITA but I do it 4 times a year..

I shipped my bow when I went to Idaho on mountain lion hunt FYI. Something to consider.

If traveling with ammo...it needs to be in it's original style box. NOT loose... it can travel with the firearm.

  • Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
  • Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
  • Small arms ammunition (up to .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge) must be packaged in a fiber (such as cardboard), wood, plastic, or metal box specifically designed to carry ammunition and declared to your airline.
  • Ammunition may be transported in the same hard-sided, locked case as a firearm if it has been packed as described above. You cannot use firearm magazines or clips for packing ammunition unless they completely enclose the ammunition. Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be boxed or included within a hard-sided, locked case.

I just flew delta to South Dakota for a hunting trip. Took 2 rifles and my carry pistol. All in a pelican vault case.
You have to have a lock on all possible spots to lock. Doesn’t have to be a TSA lock. Can just be a padlock.
You can carry up to 11lbs of ammo with you. I had most of it in my checked bag and some in my magazines in the gun case(not in the rifle)

Just declare that you have firearms to check when you get to the airport. It’s no big deal
