Sparrow Defense is holding a low light pistol techniques class at an outdoor range in Watkinsville, Georgia. This will be a 4-5 hour class that will instruct students in the principles of using hand-held and weapon-mounted flashlights in defensive and concealed carry shooting applications. The course will begin at 4:00 PM on Friday the 21st of November (so that there's light to learn the techniques). After sunset, students will then engage in drills and shooting techniques on an outdoor range. November 21st will be a new moon, so it will be dark and cold.

The link to the course is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/504827382953342/

The cost for the course will be $100.00 and will include all student handouts and range fees. Students should bring any hand-held or weapons-mounted flashlights that they have and wish to use during the course. NOTE: If a student wishes to use a weapon-mounted light, it must fit in the student's holster during the live fire portion.

Students who attend the course will also receive a discount card good for 40% off online purchase / cart up to $1,200.00 on the SureFire.com website.

Students should expect to shoot between 200 and 250 rounds at this course.

There will be three instructors on hand for the course.

Safety will be the highest priority of the instructors. If you've never shot a pistol before, this isn't a class for you. However, if you've been shooting, have good firearm safety practices, and want to learn how low light situations alter the dynamics of using your weapon, this course is for you. When you register, I'll ask you a few questions about your shooting experience to make sure you'll benefit from the course.

For those who've never attended a low-light class I would highly recommend that you do so.

It would be much better to go through the learning curve under the more "forgiving" environment of the training range as opposed to the harsh reality of real life.

Pardon the partial pun but it is very eye-opening & not what you would expect.

In response to a number of questions about what the course will actually cover, here's a bit more specific information about how we're going to lay it out:

Class starts at 4:00 PM. Students should be ready to go at that time. This is a defensive pistol course, and the topics covered will include:
- How the eye works / what night vision is
- What night sights actually do (probably not what you think)
- Techniques for using a hand-held flashlight in conjunction with a pistol
- Techniques for using a weapons-mounted light
- The use of flash sight picture in close quarters / dark environments
- How to search for and identify a target using direct and indirect lighting
- The use of light in a structure for home defense
- How to reload and manipulate a firearm when using a flashlight
- Using cover and concealment in conjunction with a light
- What "Light Discipline" means and why it's important to you

We will do dry and live fire practice in daylight conditions so that every student can try the various flashlight methods and decide which one they prefer for his or herself. Following that, we're going to let it get very dark and spooky. That will also be a good time for a meal break. The range is remote, so students should bring food with them. Following the onset of darkness, we will engage in live fire drills and training. We will end the course by having the students measure their proficiency against two courses of fire:
1. Students will have a shoot / no shoot scenario that will require them to identify targets and make good hits on the threat targets. It will require the student to use all of the skills practiced during the course (use of cover, light discipline, reloads, etc.)
2. Students will finish the class by shooting a Georgia POST approved low light course of fire (the same one I shoot every year as a LEO)

There will be three POST Firearms Instructors on scene, one of whom is also a Paramedic. Two of them have been SWAT commanders. Any LEO's will receive POST credit towards their yearly training requirements.

What you should bring:
Pistol (Semi or revolver)
Two mags (minimum)
Holster and mag pouch
Low intensity light or light with red filter
A minimum of 150 rounds of ammunition
Eye/ear protection (not sunglasses)
Hand or weapon mounted lights you want to learn how to use
