Low priced hunting rifle for my son

Looking for a low priced hunting rifle for my son. Not too picky, a single shot would be fine, bolt-action, whatever. He's big for his age, so I don't need a small caliber necessarily. Somewhere in the range of .223 to 30-06. Looking to keep it under 300.

I can get a new CVA hunter in 44 mag for about 250, so looking for something that;s a better deal than that.

he's 14. But he's 6'2". Also, doesn't have to be a 'hunting' rifle. An Ar or SKS or something like that would probably be fine.

He already has a 20g that he takes the odd squirrel with.

There was a Ruger American listed the other day for the cheap. Might still be around. I’ve seen them for 300 or less used.
