I know all the hype on high tech, high dollar lubricants, but my question is:

1. Who has used motor oil (either normal or synthetic) as a firearms lubricant?
2. Who has used automotive grease and what type on firearms?

What did you use, and what were your experiences.
(I have a quart of Mobil 1 , 5W20 staring me in the face and daring me to use it.)

I've used Mobil1 synthetic. It works well, but don't get a really thin version or it will run off / dry out pretty quickly. I eventually ditched it for weaponsheild and most recently, Fireclean. I wasn't really a fan of having motor oil blown back into my face or breathing in the fumes.

Ed's Red and other "Home Brewed" CLP's use Automatic Transmission Fluid because of its high-temperature performance (600 F).
Ed's also contains liquid lanolin which gives a nice clean finish. I use a solution of alcohol and lanolin to lube the exterior of my weapons as well as
a case lube for reloading! I use a batch of my own Ed's Red as well as a 50/50 mixture of Mystery Motor Oil and Hoppe's #9 for most of my CLP
needs. Lithium Grease appears to meet all of my Gun Grease needs .. a little bit goes a long way!
