The CMP store does have some examples of rifles on display from which you may pick, but it is only a small fraction of their inventory. Unless you gtr the "newly rebuilt" grade, the display rifles are normally toward the bottom of the grade rating. If you want a field or service grade, you will almost always get a better rifle mail order in that grade than what you have to pick from at the store, as they do not want a bunch of disappointed mail order buyers. My experience after multiple trips to Anniston.
But like one guy said, no matter what you get, it is still a Garand!

At least you know what you are getting with the CMP, rifle is graded and barrel wear is listed they are however all mix-masters unless they just dug up a collectors grade rifle but then thats going to run you alot more and not going to be a war time rifle as those have pretty much all gone through some arsenal rework.
Not being an expert, it is my understanding if the rifle is not a mix master, it is a correct grade/rifle and commands a little higher price. Having said that, I have a fairly nice service grade that I am willing to sell for 900 whose stock I have cleaned and applied two coats of tung oil. It is a Springfield Dec 1943 and don't have the barrel date and specs handy or pic. I will go check on these if you are interested.
If you are interested in getting a Garand, buy a muzzle gauge and throat erosion gauge FIRST!
I was looking at a pristine Garand that walked into a gunshow once, when I gauged the muzzle, the barrel absolutely swallowed the gauge.
The gauges are available from CMP and several internet sites, including ebay and Brownell's.
That's a deal if you hand pick one at the store it is $730 PLUS 10% tax IF they have any out which from Forum reports they do not.

yeah I once took what looked like a beat up Garand in a multi gun trade, when i got it home and gauged it I was pleasantly surprised with me0 and TE-1
I must have replaced the blue tag with ME/TE. but my gauge shows 1/3. This rifle looks a lot better than I remembered. Barre is also SA, could be later date, hard to read. The top one is the SA I will sell. The lower is for comparison as it is a HRA with a brand new walnut stock. The top one has only two blemishes worth mentioning. The second pic
shows dent at forward end of enbloc release lever. Third pic shows rifle on bottom. Fourth pic show depression in rear of stock which could possibly be brought out with heat. The stocks a really a little darker than show in the pics. Please don't be presssured to purchase this rifle, but it will never be offered for 900 again after this offer. That HRA with a HRA -56 barrel is a beautiful rifle that I would n't sell for less than 1100 and this SA looks almost as good. Thanks for looking.

Should have added the rifle comes with the CMP certificate of authentisity (however you spell it), one enbloc, hard case and something you probably don't get at the CMP - a mailing carton!
