My son was in the Navy (don't hate,he worked with Marines in an air wing) and when he deployed I sent him a nice Leatherman with the belt sheath and the set of bit drivers that fit it.
He used the crap out of that, more than the nice Benchmade folder I sent.

The watch, folding knife or multi tool are all great. Anything that's usable everyday will remind him of how proud you are and he'll see it day in and day out.

You could have the knife or multi tool engraved with a personal message also. The watch (most likely a G-shock (Mudman, Military, Mudmaster or Frogman) or Suunto Core Military model) can only be engraved on the metal back and there's not really a place to do it unless they polish out the factory engraving.

Great ideas guys (except the hookers & coke - still funny though! - I needed a good laugh). He gets daily letters from me, mom, little bro and sis. He said that letters were his only pleasure there. He def knows how proud I am. Poor kid, he sent me a Father's Day letter that literally made me cry - the best words ever written or spoken to me. Anyway, ideas are leading me towards a watch and multi tool.

He wanted a letter about current events after someone told him about Kimbo Slice dying. That's what my letter for today had: Pulse club shooting & gun control legislation, Paul Ryan being a wuss, Ali's death, UFC 200 & Lesnar coming back 7/9, Benghazi report being released & the cause of delay's (all PC bs!), and the Pentagon allowing transgender in the military and paying for the ID re-assignment surgeries. That should give them something to talk about.
