Mauser 1908 ?'s

A friend found this rifle in a old travel trailer that belonged to his grandfather (WWII Vet)
looks like grand-pa had it cut down

it's a 7x57, here's curious about year of manufacture and where it was made

I did verify the serial # is 8984 (not 3984)

Hey this looks like a German-made 1908 export Mauser that went to Brazil. Because it is 7mm the action is shorter than the 8mm, a good choice for conversion to the shorter .308 rather than the 30-06 conversions done to the 8mm Mausers. You can see the rays of the sun from the Brazilian Crest under the scope mount. Nice!

You sure about that? I may have to take a tape measure out to see, eyeballing they look the same.
I'd say Brazilian, 1908 on the side and you can see part of the crest. One of the better Mausers due to being made in peace time Germany.

The original stock had a brass collet for bolt disassembly, looks like that may be missing.

FYI did a quick check of Mauser action lengths... the 7mm action was the shortest; the 6.5 Swede action 1/8" longer; the GEW98 1/4" longer than 7mm, Mod98 slightly longer still. So your 1908 action should be in the 7mm shorter category... guess that's why Dad built his 1960's deer gun on a 1908 action feeding 308W smoothly.

I'm no expert but I believe your wrong on this, I just measured 3 Mauser actions, a Mark X commercial 30/06, Heym Military sporter in 30/06 and a 1908 in 7mm. All three actions are the same width and length. All three are I believe large ring Mausers. There are a lot of non 98 7mm models that were converted to 308 in South America.
