How does 300 Blackout compare to a 556 AR? Just got a email about a Daniel Defense 300 Blackout for $1200. Seem like a good price but I don’t know anything about it.

I wouldn't spend that much, I would build my own for half the price. 1200 is steep for a 300.

The caliber is similar to 7.62x39, similar to 30/30. The rifle...well you need to know what you are looking at and be in the market. It's not a steal but a good price if you are looking and it's all DD and not beat to ****. Pics would be worth a ton.
Not Daniel defense, just in general, a 300 build on your own is cheaper lol. My friend built a 300 for about 630. I built my 5.56 for under 600 without scope. But I am sure if you bought there lower, you could built it for under 1200 still lol

Is anyone really looking for serious quality when 300 blackout is a 200 yard round? It’s an awesome short range round, But lacks performance at range, and high end ARs don’t really improve its performance.
To answer the OPs question, look at the ballistic differences for each caliber, as well as cost of ammo. Depending on what you plan on using that rifle for, the choice should be really clear.

Why is there an assumption that building a .300 Blackout is cheaper than building a 5.56? Parts are the same, except for the barrel.
A cheaply-built gun is a cheaply-built gun, in any caliber. There are folks that trust .300Blk as a self-defense round, in which case a $1200 price tag on a DD is a good price on a solid gun. A 125grn NBT at 2100fps is a highly capable round for 2- and 4-legged critters. I don’t use .300Blk for self-defense, but it’ll do it just fine with the right load and setup.
I’ve got a buddy that does quite a bit of hog hunting from a helicopter. One of the rifles that he uses is a .300Blk with supersonic handloads. He built the gun, out of top quality parts, and it cost him quite a bit to do. When he’s zipping around slotting pigs, he doesn’t want to be clearing constant malfunctions, or missing because it’s inaccurate.
I have one .300Blk currently. It’s a 16” custom build by Accurate Ordnance on a Remington Model Seven action in an MDT LSS folding chassis. It’s topped with a Nightforce NXS Compact 2.5-10x32mm. The scope alone cost me as much or more than the $1200 DD. So far, with 220grn subs, I’m accurate out to 400yds, which is as far as I’ve shot it. I’ll be stretching it a bit further when I have the opportunity.
A “high end” build won’t improve the distance you can engage by much, but it could have a huge difference in reliability.
FWIW, I run my suppressed 16” .300Blk out to 400yds with perfect accuracy, using 220grn subs. I’ll run it further when I get the chance.
