Minimum barrel length?

What's the shortest length you can have for a rifle barrel and still be legal? Exactly where is that measured from?

16 inches measured from the breach face. Anything shorter than that will require a tax stamp being paid for.

Same as any other rifle, where the bolt ends. Easiest way to measure is to close the bolt and drop a wooden dowel in and mark where the barrel ends.

unload rifle of course. close bolt, put your leaning rod down the barrel and mark the rod. remove and measure.

The wayt to measure it is to close the bolt, then put a thin rod down the barrel until it hits the bolt face. mark the rod. measure the mark. This the current length of the barrel

Say it's 20 inches now, you know you can cut 4 inches. So measure the four from the end of the barrel. It's best to cut it a 1/4 to 1/3 inch longer than the legal length.

Step by step way to determine is to unload the rifle, close the action. Take a cleaning rod or wooden dowel and gently drop it down from the muzzle. Then place tape on it where it exits the muzzle. Measure from the tape to the end that was inserted in the barrel and presto, you know your barrel length.
