True story: When I was a kid it was fairly easy to buy running, driveable cars from a junk yard. In 1957, my buddy and I bought a 1938 Buick Special for $25. The yard owner threw in a dual carb intake manifold from a non-running Buick Century he had on the lot. We installed the intake and split the exhaust manifold and ran straight pipes to the rear using gutter downspout pipe.
We took the car to the drag strip at Brooksville and won C Stock class three weeks in a row. While racing the fourth week, a shifting fork broke in the transmission. We limped the car back to the junk yard and sold it back for $15.
You just can't buy a month of fun and a lifetime of memories for $10 anymore.
Yeah, a friend and I bought a turd brown 4 door '49 Pontiac when we were 16. Flathead Straight 8 with Hydramatic tranny. Got it for $35 because it had a rod knocking. We dropped the pan and pulled bad cylinder rod and piston, adjusted valves fully closed. That thing shook like a beyatch, but would run 95mph. Ran it 'til it died. Good times.
