Muzzle Brake or Flash Suppressor or combo Muzzle Brake Comp/Flash/Pressure Suppressor

Miculek muzzle brake.

Pros: eliminates any muzzle rise. Makes your AR shoot like a .22 magnum. Looks sexy.

Cons: LOUD. REALLY FREAKIN' LOUD. Neighbors at the range throw their empty brass shell casings at you LOUD.

Yeah, loud and annoying to stand next to during an outside shoot....muzzle blast will part your hair from 6 ft away.....dont ask me how I know.....

Miculek on a SOTA upper.

I don't use true brakes because they are so freaking loud and I don't want a gun that throws fireballs in low light. I've been running Battlecomps for a couple of years and they are a good compromise. Very good muzzle control, slightly louder than an A2 and a little more flash. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the new BCM comp as well and may use it on my pending SBR build. Flash hiders and comps are diametrically opposed. You won't find one that does both jobs well. You have to decide what's more important for your uses. The BC and upcoming BCM comps are a good compromise of both, offering the benefits of a comp without so much blast.

I personally run A2s, cheap and they work and I don't have any issue controlling the rifle in rapid fire. If I were running gun games I would consider something else but since I am not I'll take the flash suppression over a little recoil and muzzle climb reduction.

As far as muzzle brake, I have friends who have run them a lot, the two that I personally have the most experience with and around are the the PWS FS556 ans the Surefire MB 556. I feel the Surefire one is more effective, the blast isn't nearly as obnoxious as the PWS, I can actually sit next to it being fired and not feel like I am being hit and enjoy my own shooting, and it is more effective, still louder then my A2 though. However, the surefire brake did have the issue of pulling me off target since it was so effective on my friend's AR that I was getting negative muzzle climb, of course it may have been me used to compensating for the recoil of a standard AR with an A2 and the fact I bench nearly 300 and have had the issue of over driving my competition gun at the time to where I was adding weight to slow me down. The PWS doesn't have that issue however it is the loudest and most obnoxious brake I have dealt with to the point of threatening to hacksaw the ***** off if things went sideways and he didn't change it. The PWS is so loud that on a 5.56 he has had people mistake it for a .308 and it is patently painful to shoot next, the concussion is enough to drive you from a bench and I generally took up the position directly behind my friend when he would shoot it or if he was during drills where the Surefire is manageable and I don't even want to think of how bad the PWS would be on a .308. Also brakes on SBRs are even more unpleasant.

My opinion is it comes down to the mission of the rifle. If I was running three gun I really would be looking at the PWS since it is effective. For self defense the only place a brake has in my opinion is if you are running a suppressor 90%+ of the time. I personally get more advantage out of a flash hider then a brake. On a SBR I wouldn't consider a brake for the simple fact that they do get so loud as to be pointless and I have seen a few SBRs eat certain brake designs.

My AKConcepts brake looks exactly like what PWS sells as the TTO. Fantastically controllable on happy. Piercingly loud in general.

I'm considering making a blast deflector to see if it can be more user friendly in a SHTF scenario. Or go back to the SE Vortex.
