Well I've bought my first AR, a Wyndham flat top. This will be a defensive rifle, not a hunting or target rifle. I am thinking about a red dot type sight, 200.00 or so. Can you guys advise me on sights Thanks, Mike.

For a little less than you're willing to pay (actually, a lot less), you can get the Primary Arms red dot or microdot. I have the full-size aimpoint clone on my AR and I love it; also, I've never heard anything bad about PA optics from anyone who has owned one. In fact, I haven't heard anything negative about them, period. I think these would be a great Fisher Price My-First-Reddot. Go here: https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_Arms_s/586.htm and take a look. For $70-100, I sincerely doubt you'll be disappointed!

Save up and buy an Aimpoint if you are planning on trusting your life to it. Used Aimpoint can be had for anywhere between $250-300, a little more and you can get a new one.

I will vouch for PA being a good range optic, but my zero floated off after 800+ rounds in a matter of 2 hrs, therefore eliminating it, in my book, for a true defensive optic. PA has a top-notch customer support though and I had a new optiuc in hand within a week.

Eotech's can be had for $365 bran new for the base model if you know where to look and what online code to use.

Listen, take this from a guy who used to buy cheap optics, it's not worth it if you are going to be using it in a defensive role. I would add $100-200 to your budget in order to get into the neighborhood of a used/new Aimpoint or Eotech. The Aimpoint PRO comes with a mount and is in the $400 ballpark with a 30,000 hour (over 3 year) continuous battery life. If you go Eotech, I would get the transverse battery (XPS/EXPS) series. I used to think I was doing just fine getting the budget stuff but they will experience worse battery life/reliability in comparison to other big name options.

Moreover, if you go cheap now, you'll likely want to upgrade in the future and will probably end up spending more money in the long run. If it takes time to expand that budget, I would just shoot with irons until I was able to purchase a upper tier optic.

Just my 2 cents but an extra few hundred dollars spent on a defensive optic is well worth the peace of mind that it will be good to go whenever I need, especially if your amortize that cost over the life of that optic.

This is correct.

I have a millet red dot mounted on my 12ga slug gun. It's held up well, but all of the above is great advice, particularly getting used to using your irons until you get the budget and sight to meet. Don't settle, just like in romance.

True, but there are some cost effective options.
The Bushnell Holo Site is made by EOTech but uses Type2 Batteries. Also Vortex makes a very good red dot.
I used a Bushnell Holo for years, great sight, but at times the batteries were a little hard to locate. So I went with the EOTech XPS.
