Need advice/recommendations for a last minute beach trip today

My girlfriend and I were supposed to go to Las Vegas this weekend. She was really excited about it and had been looking forward to it for a long time. Unfortunately we had to reschedule due to the effects of the shutdown on air travel. She was really upset about it so I told her that I would take her to the beach this weekend instead. Only problem is, I haven't been to the beach in years and I have no idea where to go. I was thinking Panama City? Is there a better place to go to the beach this time of year? Any recommendations for a hotel with a nice view of the ocean? Can we rent a beach house somewhere for 2 nights?

I told her we would leave this afternoon so I've got like 8 hours to figure out what we're doing. Not like I waited until the last minute or anything haha. Help me out here guys...

Gonna be tough to find a house for two nights brother. I believe St. George Island still has some “Inns” that are by the night.

The Buccaneer Inn is on the ocean at SGI. Not sure how nice it is. Orange Beach has a ton of options.

Mexico beach is just west of Port St. Joe, 5-5.5 hours from here and they do have a few hotels on the beach.
No night life what’s so ever, so keep that in mind.
Panama City beach would also be good for quick get away. Further drive and much more traffic and people.

I've heard of it but never been there. Isn't it too cold to get in the water up there right now? I thought Panama City would be warm enough that we could still get in the ocean

Yeah I know it won't be cheap when I book it the same day but I've got about $1,000 to burn for this trip. Surely that's enough to find something nice that's right on the beach with a view of the ocean from our room?

Not really looking for "night life" but I do want to find something right on the beach that is still within walking distance of a few bars and restaurants. I'd like to be able to knock back a few beers or a glass of bourbon with dinner and then not have to worry about driving back to the room

We always go to San Destin. Beachside Tower 1 or 2. Private beach. Not sure about water temps. We just got back in September. Good luck.

Never been to Destin but it looks like it's about the same distance as Panama City so that's a possibility. The resort is called beachside Tower? Can you walk to any bars or restaurants from there?
