need help..is this rare?

I think im going to buy it. The guy that has it said it came off his ar10 he bought new from armalite.
Not sure what year and its chambered in .308 he took it off so he could put a
scope on a different upper.

Have,nt seen one of those in couple years they are different and also not very comfortable to cycle the charging handle.

I think the idea was to put it there so you could keep the target sighted in while you cycled a round.
Please correct me if i am wrong.

Its not original b/c it has a A2 sight. Still a neat upper, its just not a original.
