Need some input on first hunting rifle for my son.

I agree with jaba, my sons first was a inexpensive Winchester 30-30 that I got from a local pawn shop perfect to learn and not too heavy. Was not concerned with recoil as I was taught to expect it and deal with it.

I just picked up a Ruger American in 7mm-08 for my soon to be 16 year old to use. I put a Nikon scope on it then took a doe Friday evening with it. Nice shooting rifle, good enough scope, and the round is mild mannered yet more than enough for Georgia deer. I like it. May have to buy him one of his own now.

Thanks for the input guys. Academy Sports is listing a Savage Axis XP in .308 for $280.00. I think I'll go with that if they have any left.
