if you want reliability in 22lr rifle, get a lever or pump. that way when you hear the inevitable click from finicky ammo, you can clear the dud faster. with some levers, you can cock the hammer and try again.

That being said, get a shotgun

I believe the CCI Stingers would do. Hollow point of course. Those and the biggest banana magazine you can get. That and if there is a definite eminate threat don't stop shooting until it's empty. Remember that guy that took 6 rounds of 38 to the face by a women hidding in the closet with her children. 22 is dicey at best but the one thing that is in you or thier favor is no recoil so you can plant every round in a vital zone. Of course you know this as well as anybody, not exactly a first choice by any means. I do understand that not everybody can just go out and buy a decent gun right off the bat. I would tell them to start saving for a second hand revolver preferably 357 mag. Again I know you are fully aware of the importance of a stopping power round.

Aguila 22 Interceptor Is the round you want because penetration is the goal In big animals as someone already wrote.
40 Grain solid copper plated lead Rated at 1470 FPS. That is only a couple hundred FPS slower than 22 Mag if the velocity is accurate.
I bought 2 bricks but not have had a chance to test it.

No choice, dont use a .22 for home defense lmao. Minimum should be a 12 guage. If you only have .22 I feel bad for you.
