Never thought I would ask a 22LR ammo question like this

I'm having great reliability out of 40gr Winchester m-22 in both my 10-22 and my wife's lcp2 22lr. We've shot 300rds so far and haven't had a ftf. Advertised velocity is 1255fps. I'm sure it's less out of the lcp2 but I still wouldn't want to be shot with it.

I ran a box stock 10/22 as a real life truck gun for 10 years. A conservative estimate would be 10k rounds before I bothered to even clean it. Operator error.

A .22 rifle can generate equal to greater muzzle energy greater than .38 snub nose. And I can empty a magazine on target a lot quicker.

If you're talking about 22 Magnum rifles, sure.
They shoot their projectiles at 500- 800 ft. per second faster than a 22 LR does.

Rossi has an inexpensive semi automatic 22 Magnum rifle that is very light weight, only about 5 1/2 pounds, has a skinny barrel, and uses 10 round detachable magazines. The wholesale price of this gun is something like $200.
At that price, I think it would be worth it to hacksaw the 21" barrel off at 16 or 17 inches, and mount a red dot non-magnifying optic on the receiver.

Such a weapon would be good for home defense
but also good for plinking and pest or varmint control around the property.

I've had a 10/22 for years and never took good care of it. Its a 22, I don't clean it real well and have used and abused it, but it still goes bang ever time I use it. Its reliable enough for me and I've fed it all kinds of ammo.

As for a 22 for self defense. At close ranges for self defense and specifically for those unable to obtain or accurately shoot a more influencing round a 22 will get the job done. I wouldn't fight a war with it, but a double tap to the cerebral region will do the job. I never heard anyone whose been shot in the head with a 22 explain that it wasn't enough to stop the attack.
