Hey guys,

I purchased a brand new 590a1 Mossberg. I opened the box and there was quite a bit of surface rust along the barrel and where it mates with the receiver. Inside the receiver there is also some surface rust most of which I was able to take care of.

I used a toothbrush, some ballistol, and an oil rag to remove I would say 75% of the surface rust, but if you shine a light on the areas where the rust sat, you can still see an orange hue. There is no pitting thank God. I used to use fine steel wool and oil to get rid of surface rust on my used guns but those guns were blued. This 590a1 is parkerized.

My question is how do I remove the majority of this rust without damaging the parkerized finish of the barrel and the rest of the gun. Can I still use fine steel wool and some oil?

I've coated most of the gun in ballistol to let it "penetrate" but tomorrow I want this rust all gone. I know its a common problem with brand new 590a1s to come home with some rust but this is kinda issue shouldn't leave a store. I should of inspected it but I came towards closing time of my FFL (shorter hours due to covid-19).

I’ve had success with 0000 steel wool and ballistol on blued guns. Little rubbing without too much pressure. I’m sure park’d would be even more resilient. Going to try kroil myself on a larger project.

Good luck, I’ve seen Remmys with rusting out the gate, shame Mossberg didn’t schlep more oil before sending out the door.

To add to what GeauxLSU GeauxLSU said, I'd also use Breakfree CLP instead of Ballistol. Ballistol is fine for rust prevention/cleaning, but I've had better results in removing corrosion with CLP.

Picked up a regular 590 yesterday and it was covered in so much oil it had leaked out of the plastic sleeve and stained the box. Just Different guys packing them up at the factory.
