The only Sig i've ever owned was a p250 and I hated it, is the p229 a different gun all together?

The Sig P series, aluminum frame, are the only real Sigs IMHO. A P228 is a pretty awesome gun.

I've owned a number of Beretta 92s and it's a fun platform to shoot. I prefer the Taurus version as I like the frame mounted safety...

My wife just bought me a smith and wesson m&p9 compact and i love it i think it was $520.

It has a full sized grip but a smaller slide. I think it feels better than a G17 or M&P9. They're priced pretty well, but a little harder to find since they haven't been on the market long. You should be able to find a LNIB with 3 mags and night sights for around $500

Were it me I would get a Kahr, but they are smaller handguns generally intended for carry so may not suit your purpose at all.
