So I get a new Rock River with a stainless barrel. One of the first notices I read says that the barrel has been laped and does not need to be broke in. So does that mean I dont need to clean the barrel after each shot or what. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

UPdate 9/1/12
Took it to the range today. Put a Sight Mark red dot on for something to sight with.
Sighted red dot in w/ 4 shots. Shooting 2 1/2" groups at 50yrds and 4+- at 100yrds. After 20 rds Im quite happy with the Rock, and surprised with the Sightmark. Figuard Id blow it up on the first few rounds. Brought it home cleaned it up in to the safe it went.
I want to thank everyone for your input. If anyone eles has something to add, I would still be interesed in hearing it. Again thank you ODT

Go shoot it. Then clean it after shooting. I don't believe in barrel break in that much. Just google "barrel break in". There two thoughts. I look at this this way: you have to clean the barrel, but being over zealous with cleaning will do more harm than good. Hundreds of copper bullets getting through the barrel vs steel rod scratching the surfice of the fine barrel...

First thought, since I am assuming that you bought it more for precision is go do a break in if you feel the need since it is one of those things that can't hurt. That said, in reality, likely not going to make much of a difference.

Haha! I think if the barrell is not right from the factory then it will never be right.

Treat it like like you would any quality barrel. If it's lapped it should be good to go. Just don't super heat it. I don't much worry about any type of break-in procedure with chromed lined barrels though. They're hard coated, and are what are when you get them in my mind. If you get a good one, you'll know first time out.

The only useful information that I can add is that there are reports of cycling problems with "new" AR's (NOT from me)
This normally occurs when a weapon is "shot right out of the box" with no attention to giving it a "inspection" cleaning and making certain
that it is properly lubricated; this and using "crap" Ammo to break-in the action, Steel Cased stuffand your buddy's hand-loads are best used AFTER the weapon has been
shot enough to have the phosphate coating "fire-polished" on the BCG and the action path on the Upper.

In BOTH pistols and Rifles, Ido a fast "Hand Cycle" of the action several dozen times prior to that first firing ... You can be surprised at how this will
quickly loosen an action prior to placing the considerable force of actual firing a round!

My usual procedure for a new AR goes like this: field strip, clean the barrel/upper receiver/BCG, reassemble, go shoot.

I usually try to limit my first session to 100 rounds or less and then clean with Hoppes 9, bore snake, and CLP before my next session.

This hasn't failed me so far and I've had several - both Chromolly and Chrome-Lined.
