Agreed, but like in Proverbs they are referencing individuals or groups mutually influencing each other through constructive criticism, healthy competition, etc.

And in that instance, the iron that is made to sharpen (like a file) quickly sharpens iron that is dull (like a flat bar). Just rubbing random iron on some other random iron gets you stupendously slow progress. Choose your mentors well.
