No love for the .40

Hey, bring that SIG238 to a knife fight and your an instant winner!
Ain't nothing wrong with a loaded pistol - .380, 9 mm .38 or whatever. Point one at most anyone and they will do anything you want!
i rock a 9x18 as my main carry weapon. i havent had any issues with it being to under-powered yet

A lot of people, including myself, Love the .40 cal. Most everyone else HATE the caliber.... Why is this? I have seen a ton of posts in the Handgun forum where people are avoiding it like the Plague. I cant figure it out. I though it was supposed to be the best of both worlds..... both worlds beeing the 9 and the 45.

It's pretty simple.....some people can't handle the recoil of a .40. We call them pinky lifting tea sippers.

Best of both worlds indeed..Close to the same power as a 9mm with a price tag equal to that of .45..guess my hearts on my sleeve on this one, give me a 9 or .45 any day you can keep your "in between"

Close to the same power as a 9mm?

okey dokey. I want what you're smoking.

good point by cadcom, why do people campare advanced 9mm ballistics to standard .40 ammo. are there not the same advancements for the .40? i find the recoil in my usp compact .40 to be very controllable. i do have big hands like that guy in the burger king commercial, maybe thats why

I've noticed that as well. It's like "oh yeah, my 9mm +p+++++++ is just as equal as your standard .40 pal!" But then when you point out the advanced ballistics that .40s also have, they get quiet and then it's the old "well...your recoil is snappier than mine!".

The lack of popularity for the much maligned .40 makes the guns more affordable and for $100 I can drop a .357sig barrel in my Glock 22.

I LOVE the .357 Sig! Kinda' like a .357 Magnum "Wheelgun" in a lighter, flatter "Package"...

Another cartridge looking for a problem to solve. Talk about expensive to shoot!

See Above Comment by me...also, IF you are willing to "Shop Around", you can find .357 Sig ammo for the Same Price as the .40 S&W Stuff...just gotta' "Surf" some, and we ALL like THAT, right? What's NOT to like--"Stopping Power" like the LEGENDARY .357 Magnum in a "Handier" Package?....mikey357

Yep. For as comparatively weak as all commonly used defensive handgun rounds are in contrast to a decent long gun, I'll take extra capacity and cheaper ammo with the 9MM over the .40 which I find less enjoyable to shoot anyhow. There's nothing really punishing about it. I think I can handle firing the awesome stopping-knock-down-flesh-disintegrating power of the almighty .40 S&W or whatever the gun rags are selling you guys this week. Different strokes and all that crap. Nothing against the round or people who use it. Just not for me.

I made my choice with caliber based upon platform and the performance I could get out of the pistol and caliber. So I ended up with 1911 in .45 and snubbie revolver in .357 magnum. My back-up is a NAA Blackjack in 22mag that is pretty wicked for it's small size when loaded with Hornady Critical Defense.

Protective Measures had it right, focus on what works for you. A gun on your person that you have confidence in is better than the cool gun left at home.

That is why I don't use .40. I feel or think that I am inherently inaccurate with the round so I don't use it.

If power in a semi auto is what you want some of you guys need to shoot my converted Range Officer in .460 Rowland. It is a pistol you can carry, it holds 8 + 1 and it has the power of a approximately a .44 magnum. I use it now b/c it makes my old 1006 10mm look like a pansy. It is costly to practice with though so it is a back-up during hunting trips and a companion to
my Colt Python when I'm taking a "walk" in the "woods".

Find what works for you and get really proficient with it. Afterwards, worry about getting the cool stuff and trying out new guns and calibers.
