YMMV. What I have seen is the exact opposite. I fixed an ODT member just the other day on the open range day. He was shooting similar to your method, I changed him over to mine. He was able to shoot faster, due to better recoil control, and with more accuracy. Faster AND more accurate is where it’s at!
Watch some videos of the top names in USPSA and see which technique the vast majority use; thumbs forward. Case in point is the pic the OP posted at the beginning of this showing the grip of SIG Team Captain Max Michel.
Another "problem" I have is that I shoot pistols better right handed, but my left eye is more dominant = cross eye dominance. Normally it's not that much of a problem; I just rotate my head a little bit and the left eye lines up with the sights. Have you ever tried to train someone to switch eyes, or maybe to start shooting left handed? How hard is it?
Usually I have cross dominant folks do exactly what you’re already doing. That works for most, but doesn’t mean it’s the best option for you. I know a lot of excellent shooters that use the method that you described.
I’ve taken multiple folks to the range and run them through a series of timed and scored drills to figure out what method works best for them. For instance, in your case, I would have you run the drills multiple times in a few different ways:
1. Right hand, left eye, both eyes open.
2. Right hand, left eye open, right eye closed.
3. Right hand, right eye open, left eye closed.
This lets me figure out which technique works best for YOU, not which method is preferred by the internet and gun writers.
“But you’re not supposed to shoot with one eye closed!!!”, the masses wail in anguish.
What matters most is the ability to hit the other guy before he hits you, preferably with multiple, accurate rounds. If you can do that better with one eye closed, then that’s what you should be doing.
One of the other issues is levels of dominance. Not only do you have a dominant eye, but how dominant that eye is over the other varies from person to person. Some folks have eyes that are nearly equal in dominance and, when they shoot with both eyes open, their eyes will sometimes “fight” for dominance.
The ability to switch hands is pretty rare. I was born a lefty, but my Dad forced me to be a righty as a kid. The only thing I do lefty is shoot pool. No idea where that came from. All in all, it worked out for me, as I’m right eye dominant. The upside is that I am just as accurate with my left hand as I am with my right hand, but I’m faster with my right hand because that’s where most of my training and practice have been.
I’ve never met the person that the answer to their problem was to switch hands. I’m not saying that isn’t YOUR answer, but it’s highly unlikely. One of the Instructors that works for me is cross dominant; right hand and left eye. He shoots handguns with his right hand, but uses long guns as a lefty.......and he is outstanding with both. It isn’t that big a deal.
That’s not one of the drills I use. The drills themselves aren’t that important; it’s that they’re timed and scored. We shoot them multiple times and get the average.
