old restaurant in Athens

My wife's uncle lived in Winder. When we visited from '79 through the late '80s, we made a number of trips to Charlie Williams. I could pack it away. I know embarrassed the in-laws.

Charlie Williams Pinecrest lodge. Hands down some of the best food I've ever tasted. Absolutely loved going there. Absolutely hated leaving there cause climbing that long l, pretty steep pathway with the pine log handrail between the parking lot and front door might as damn well been Mt. Everest after my fat ass had my fill of fried quail, crab legs, sides and blackberry cobbler.

Sadly, and as per the norm of everything else old and loved in N.Ga, that well loved place is completely gone and is now the site of a damn subdivision.

I remember a place called Swamp Gunnia near Hull
Swamp guinea was a kind of general store/antique shop on hwy 53 between Braselton and Oakwood. It's now a church.

Further reading the comments it seems there was a restaurant named this I had never heard of. I only knew of the place I said above.

Charlie Williams had three places open here for a time. The original, one on Timothy and another next to McDonalds out by Athens Tech. The one by Athens Tech opened up and maybe a year later they all closed down.
I only knew of/remember the original and the one beside Mcdonalds close to athens tech. Wish I had known about one on timothy rd. That would have been a lot closet to me in Bethlehem at the time.

It was where Loco's is now. I used to work at the Lincoln Mercury dealership on 78 and there was a trail through the back that we used to walk over there for lunch. If I remember correctly it was called Charlie Williams Express or something like that. Very little seating, mostly drive through and take out.

Wow, that place sounds so cool. Wish I got to experience it. Y’all know of anything similar still out there like this place?
Not in Athens.

Similar place of the same era was the Swamp Guinea, as mentioned above. Probably the best catfish I have ever eaten. I was a student, and we could go there on Sat. night, and eat enough for to get us through the whole weekend,

Charlie Williams is a subdivision now, the family kept the old waterwheel as a memorial on the property. When I was in school, it was considered out in the country.

Charlie Williams had a bigger selection, was more expensive, on a student budget, that made a lot of difference.

Charlie Williams, the person, had an arrowhead collection of thousands, After he passed, the restaurant closed, they auctioned off the arrowheads, many of them in shadow boxes, and just that auction took a full day. He started as a teenager and mostly collected them from the fields in the Whitehall area (area of Athens where the restaurant was located).

I went to the auction for the restaurant stuff, and bought some chafing stands, which I still have.
