I guess it just seems to me that there should be some risk of injury, agony of defeat, or humiliation for something to be a real sport. Maybe if they had to do it with no more clothing than an MMA fighter, it would be more interesting. Again, if they got slightly electrocuted when that foil touches their suits, it would be entertaining too.
They are basically wearing a sweat suit, not armor. The mesh vest is for scoring, not protection.
If you remember getting whooped with a switch, imagine making it out of metal. When I did it, I had raised welts on my hands, wrists, and forearms. It doesn't often draw blood, but it can hurt.
Sabre is more exciting as a spectator sport, but o don't think it's an Olympic event.
