I guess if you're using a 280, the 308 should be fine. However the 280 would probably be better for pronghorn. The 308 seems light for bear and I'd think elk

When you look at .280AI, the closest comparison is the 7mmRemMag. I’m running the same bullet as the 7mmRemMag, at about 100fps slower. Elk can’t tell the difference in 100fps.

I killed 2 elk at approximately 480 yards with the .280AI. Didn’t recover either bullet. One was a head shot, though.

.308 is more than enough. For 80 years the record for a Rocky Mtn elk was a bull shot with a .30-40 Krag.

Last year, my buddy’s wife took her nice bull with a .308 at 250yds. He walked 5 yards and dropped. Bullet went through and through, and wasn’t recovered.

Gotta remember, folks are taking elk with bow n’ arrows.

This bull was taken on this property a couple months ago with a bow. He went no more than 100 yards.

Nice one. No way I'd try with a bow. I'd have to be desperate. I guess if 30-40 can do it......I've taken more deer with a 308 than anything else. I think my longest shot was 350yds. Never had to shoot farther, that's all.
The trip you're on was definitely on my bucket list. Would be curious to total cost. I'd probably want to drive. Might not when I figure out fuel cost. I've been out there before driving

4th day. Took my rifle for a walk again today.

Saw some gorgeous elk bulls, and the best mule deer buck I’ve ever seen. Passed up shots on multiple mule deer does this morning, which I’m starting to regret.

Saw and heard 2 bald eagles fighting over a valley.
