Today’s shining example of “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished” comes from Fredericksburg, VA, where a young girl prevented the family cat from pouncing on a lost baby woodpecker and her mom ended up with a $535 ticket (and faces the possibility of jail time) for violating the Federal Migratory Bird Act

It's just like the case where LEO closed down the little girls selling lemonade. It's EZ to fine law abiding citizens because they will likely obey and pay the "fine" because it's the law. It's harder to pursue real criminals. She is technically guilty, she admitted it to government officials more than once. In the Lowes and in a report to Fish & Game. She is guilty per the letter of the law (forget intent), case closed. Ignorance of the law is not a defense. Low hanging fruit and all that.

I'm with the government, I'm here to help.

This whole thing is unfortunate, but, she won't do a day in jail. She is going to have to pay the fine. The state isn't gonna let her out of paying the $$$. No way.

If that were me Id be on my back porch with a pellet gun like a 10yr old shooting every f-ing bird I could find. If youre gonna make me pay $500, Im gonna kill $500 worth of birds to get my moneys worth!
