Pistol/SBR Lower?

I am considering getting an SBR or AR pistol. I am aware of the regulations on these (Brace, stabilizer, afg etc.) so please do not go on about the ridiculous tax stamp and all that. I am 100% aware of the legality for owning an SBR under fed reg. But can I use a carbine lower (DD M4A1) with a 10'' barrel upper? Is the buffer an issue? I would love to save money and just purchase or build a short barrel upper and just swap out lowers if its possible. Maybe a DD MK18 upper?

What do i need? Any insight is appreciate. Thanks

not 100% sure on what your asking but if your asking can you use any lower on a pistol, yes as long as its a virgin lower that's never had a stock attached, carbine length buffers should be fine. now if your asking can you just throw a 10" upper on a standard complete lower, then sure as long as you pay the 200 tax stamp and wait around awhile

Ok cool. Yes I understand the tax stamp and the regs on that. I just wasn't sure if the the buffer assembly needed to be changed. Thanks

Respectfully, I'm not sure that you are aware of the regulations, given the bolded statement. You must fill out a Form 1 on any lower that has a buttstock onto which you wish to attach an upper with a barrel less than 16" in length.

Respectfully, I completely understand the regulations. The Form-1 tax form is unavoidable IF I want to keep it Federally legal and registered as an SBR. But the "saving money" would come in if I could simply swap lowers from a full length 14.5 barrel with 1.5 pinned and welded to the shorter barreled upper I buy (or save money and build). I am not sure you understand my question. It was not regarding the legality, only the functionality between a factory carbine lower and 2 different length uppers. I appreciate you looking out for me but I just wanted to know if it would work. Not trying to be rude back to you but every time I post something (or see someone else's post) someone always tries to teach a lesson with their superior knowledge or belittle the post.

Vice Versa. Full length factory lower with SBR/Pistol upper. I know they sell rifle and carbine buffer assemblies. I'm new to building and didn't know if the buffer was an issue. But I have a factory DD M4A1. I want to use that lower and buy/build a 10.5ish upper. Not looking for legal advice. I may end up doing a pistol with a brace or other, but want to weigh out the options if I SBR it. Another way to ask it..... Is the lower on a factory built SBR the exact same as lower on a factory built carbine or rifle length AR.

Since you've already got the legal stuff under control, I guess you're just wanting to know about the actual hardware?

There is no physical difference between a carbine lower and an SBR lower.

The only difference between a carbine or SBR lower VS. a pistol lower is the buffer tube. All the other parts are exactly the same.

Any AR upper with any length barrel will function just fine on any of those lowers.

You *MIGHT* have to get a different buffer depending on your setup, but if you're running a carbine buffer now, it'll probably work.
