I know this isn’t technically a firearms question but any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a co-worker that is interested in buying quality plates and a carrier. I told him I would research it but to be completely honest, I have zero interest in the subject. I see them for sale and trade on ODT all the time. Anyone knowledgeable on them? Thanks in advance.

I worked the Army’s and USMC’s body-armor programs for the last 5 years of my Mil career... ill PM you and send my number... I’m very knowledgeable in this subject. I can show you some things hands on if your close by or want to link up for discussions.

BTW, I’m 2 years retired just so you know I’m not someone saying this and is 60 yrs old.

Just remember, investing in Quality Armor is investing in your life. If you so choose to skimp, you maybe skimping on possible coming home to loved ones.

UPDATE: 11 June 2020

1st thing to look for is a NIJ certification from whomever your purchasing from and get some sort of paperwork saying who performed the NIJ testing.

  • NIJ/NLECTC Approved Testing Laboratories linked beow:

Info for you below to consider: https://www.justnet.org/compliant/N... Institute of Justice, and meets the needs and

(I would stay away from anything that basically says based on previous threat data, based in internal manufacture testing performed to NIJ standards of protocols.

Also I have had numerous questions from Fellow ODT'rs asking what to purchase first, the Plate or the soft armor.......

If you like to get into some discussions, shoot me a PM and i'll send you my number. We can do a Face-time so your able to see exactly what I am talking about.

Respectfully
Chris

Myself and a few other guys at work are using the 5.11 TacTec carrier with Lvl III+ plates and trauma pads from Cati Armor. Not the lightest setup by any means, but it is reasonably comfortable and breathable.

Depending on what he’s planning on doing with it and his budget would weigh heavily on what he should buy. If it’s just end of the world stuff and it’s going to collect dust the. Don’t spend a lot. There’s a reason why there’s always plates and PCs on here. I got mine from on here lol

If it’s going to be worn a lot or used for classes and such it would be good to invest in some higher quality gear. I agree with what bulletslinger is saying, armor is life saving equipment but that doesn’t mean you have to buy $300 plates. Like a lot of things the price difference comes down to details like weight, cuts, and flat vs multi curve. A lot of it is personal preference and feel. I have a shellback tactical with steel multi curve plates but I want to get a Spiritus LV119 setup for its lower profile.

Btw fit is key with plates. Shouldn’t cover from neck to belt, just the vitals.

That last part is huge I see people wearing plates wrong all the time!
From just touching the bottom of the collar bone to inch and a half above the belly button will give you your best results with greatest mobility. I've seen 180lb dudes with plates for a 300lb dude I guess they are safe but the cant move.
