Plinking .22LR - GSG-5 vs. M&P15-22

I have been a handgun guy and never got into long guns. My dad had some shotguns around for duck/quail hunting but it was never my thing. Now I am starting to think about getting into some rifles. But before I jump in, I thought it might be good to test the water a bit, before I full committ to building an AR or something, by getting a .22. Maybe a GSG-5 or a M&P15-22. They are similar in price and both have some unique cool factor. What are your first hand experience with either? Which would you prefer?

I would love to get a MP5 clone, eventually. To me, the MP5A3 has always be coolest submachine. So GSG-5 would kinda fill that void. With the AR, it would be great to have one, as well. If I go that route, I'd love to have a .22 that can be converted to a 223. But I think the M&P15-22 is dedicated .22 platform. It's be possible to get a 223 and get a .22LR upper to convert down.

You guys are making too much sense! I need some bad influence to tell me to get the biggest and baddest avaiable.

10/22 would be perfect but it lacks the cool factor, I guess. Any first hand experience with GSG-5? I've heard either really good reviews or really bad (fail to cycle/jamming). I know the M&P is rock solid.

10/22 and customize the heck out of it. and now that I just read your last post, I've never had a mp22 so I can't tell you on that one but have owned a GSG and I traded, I own a lot of 10/22's and have yet to be talked out of one of them. I shoot a lot and probably shoot a 10/22 more than anything else when it comes to a rifle, cheap ammo and super reliable.

One of the best things about the M&P besides its awesome performance, is it looks cool, right ought of the box. As good as 10-22's are, I cant say that about most of them.

Others are right - get a 10/22 and pimp it to your standards. Better gun, better resale, easier to find parts/accessories, and you can change it later if you get bored (tacticool is in now but something cooler will be out next year and it will come out for the 10/22 first). A 15-22 will always be just that (I own both). As for the GSG, I don't like plinking with oversized pistols/undersized rifles. Looks cool but not nearly as functional as the other choices mentioned.

Look at the Ruger SR22 rifle. I just got one and it is a great rifle and a lot of fun to shoot. l
