Build a CMMG .22lr on a forged lower and just buy a 5.56 upper when you're ready to bump up

Thanks for all your feedback. Sounds like the GSG is not getting any love here. Most of you suggested a more traditional rifle, like a 10/22. I would assume the tactical variation. If I were going for the AR route, I might want to look into a .22 with a lower that would support a 5.56 later on. In that case, the M&P15-22 isn't an option... ok, going back to the drawing board.
I mostly hear negatives about how ARs with .22 conversions are so inaccurate. On the other hand, you cannot go wrong with a 10/22 or the AR styled Ruger SR-22. It's just cheap fun to shoot and you can customize it as much or as little as you want. The Ruger rotary mags are great, but Ruger also has the BX-25 25 round banana mags, which is what I prefer.
15-22, it's pure family fun!
AR in .22 are only inaccurate if it's a kit and uses the same barrel as the .223 upper and only changing out the bolt and hammer and magazine.
I think a DEDICATED .22 upper should be more accurate.
You should get a built AR upper, there's been many for less than $150.
Then get a dedicated .22 upper.

Just want to be sure I am reading this right. Are you suggesting that the M&P15-22 will accept a 5.56 upper when I want to move up? I heard the opposite somewhere.
No, you will have to buy a regulation mil spec lower. The M&P15-22 lower will NOT accept other uppers. The takedown pins are located in different locations to make it a dedicated lower platform.
