OK, I have lived in the state of GA for a while now but have not needed to purchase a used car from a private seller since i have been here. My question is if I purchase a used car from a private seller in the state can I just drive the car home or do I have to have it towed since the car is not registered and won't have a tag. The reason i ask is if I need to have it towed to my house that will dig into my budget to purchase a vehicle, I asked the guys I work with and half said I could just drive it home and not get pulled over and ticketed and the other half said I can't, thanks in advance, i'm just confused on the subject.

Once you buy the vehicle, you'll need to register, title, and tag it, so be sure to get all the documentation you need when you buy. Then take the following to your local Tax Commissioner's Office to get your tags:

  • Certificate or origin, or the original title.
  • Bill of sale.
  • Appropriate fees and taxes. The original title fee is $18; a replacement is $8. A new law in Georgia requires sales tax to be paid at the time you register and title the vehicle, regardless of the registration time period, unless you have documentation proving the tax has already been paid.
Georgia assesses numerous penalty fees for late registration, so make sure you register and title your vehicle in a timely manner. You have 30 days to register after you purchase or transfer a title without penalty.

You can drive it home and be legal. You don't even need a stupid piece of cardboard that says "tag applied for."

I usually call my insurance company with the vin number and vehicle details the day I buy it and have it covered by my insurance before I own it. Then from what I recall, you have 30 days in Ga before it has to be registered.

I got pulled over once for no tag on a truck I just purchased from a private seller. Cop checked my BOS, and Title, and the insurance card for another vehicle I owned, all of which I had on me, no problem. I hope you don't get sticker shock when you go to the tag office and have to pay the taxes.

You can legally drive it

Just keep the BOS and ins card from your other Vehicle
With you

IF you get stopped
(I've never gotten stopped for NO tag, I have gotten stopped multiple times for expired tags )

The 30 days is if you buy from a dealer

Wih this last sales tax law. Bought and paid for by he dealers bribing the right lawmakers

The 30 days only applies of you buy from a dealer

If you buy from a private individual you now only have 7 days !!!

If the seller does nt remove the old plate. You should remove it before you drive home

No telling how many warrants the guy has and you don't want to drive with their plate

I've driven lots with no tag and never got stopped by the cops

They don't pay much attn to a missing plate
If you have an expired plate though
You won't make it 4 miles before you get pulled over
