I have a question on indoor range safe ammo. some ranges dont allow steel core ammo but i havent heard anything about steel cased ammo and steel cased is all that i can find. I've got a 5.45 ak and would like to not have to drive out to the middle of nowhere to shoot the thing. anyone have suggestions on ammo?

Some ranges such as Wild West Traders do not allow steel cased ammunition... The guys at Wild West Traders tried to feed me a big fat line of BS saying that steel cased ammo caused a safety issue but I have a feeling that their rule has more to do with their selling the spent casings than it does safety! If I were you I would call any range that you plan on going to ahead of time that way you know their rules and you don't waste gas going somewhere that is more concerned with selling brass than they are in the sport of shooting.

I've watched some of the guys sneak their Tula into Wild West. What I noticed was that the Tula, for what ever reason, created a lot of sparks when it hit the back stop. Not sure if it was the caliber, this guy was shooting 45 acp. I don't see this with other ammo. Just my observation. Andrew makes a good point about reselling the spent casings.

Most all Russian ammo, rifle ammo anyway, use steel jacketed projectiles with a copper wash or plate added, which is why most places wont let you shoot it indoors or at steel targets outdoors. Who knows if it is really an issue or if they have some other motive going (collecting brass, selling ammo, being jerks, nationalism against russia, etc) but the magnet test is really common now and also a pain in my ass personally haha.

Edit: so yeah, for 5.45 youre pretty limited. Its either cheap cheap surplus you cant shoot anywhere or expensive american ammo you cant find anywhere, thats about it. Im not a 74 guy but maybe someone who is knows of a source for non magnetic bullets, you could pull down some rounds and reload them with copper stuff, would still be dirt cheap to shoot comparatively.

Or you could shoot at a range with a rubber media back stop. Check out www.sandyspringsshootingrange.com just a short scoot across the top end of the perimeter from Marietta. Shoot my AK74 there all day long with steel-core surplus. They've never said a thing.

Let me guess, you went to Ed's aka The Firing Line?? ;). Last time I was there they did a visual inspection of all my ammo(i had multiple cans for about 5 guns). I am lucky enough to have quick shot near me. it's off briarcliff. they are cool about shooting anything. nice place.
ps. they let me shoot all the surplus for my 5.45 i want. sorry they aren't closer to you.
