Alright everyone, help me keep my bias that a red dot is not needed on a pistol. I’m iffy on how I shoot with and without. I just feel like justifying that you don’t need one to be a bad a$$ shot.

I don't see the practical use of a micro red dot optic on a defensive pistol when said pistol is utilized at typical self defense distances of maybe three yds, or maybe 5 yards tops.

But for taking a headshot and 50 feet, sure.
For a "hostage rescue shot" you should take every advantage you can get.
A body shot at 25, 40, or 50+ yards?
Yes, I'll take that optic thank you.

I somewhere have an old school, either late 60's or early 70's vintage, Soviet "red dot" sight. I'll have to go dig it out some day and take some pics for the ODT. Crudely made, utilitarian, sturdy, ugly as all get out but hey......the thing still works just fine after all these decades!

It is correct, you don’t NEED one. It is a force multiplier when used correctly and by someone who is proficient with it.

The same can be said for a rifle with irons vs a rifle with an unmagnified optic.
If you don’t understand the benefit of a red dot on a pistol, then you’ve already made up your mind and won’t be swayed.

The thing I like the most about a red dot on my pistols, it is a good teaching aid. It will show you what you are doing right and wrong.

It keeps you honest, if I handed you mine and you missed, there’s no more “the sights are off” excuse. It’s you, plain and simple. Use better form, manipulation and control.

The people that shoot up the ceilings and walls at the local ranges certainly could use all the help they can get. Myself, I don't like using the optics and I feel they slow me down. But running parallel with what Mr. Booshie stated above, if it can help someone save a life...... dang it I'm all for those who can get it in there and make it count. Best to keep an open mind.

I tried red dot pistol long long ago and hated it. I swore it off. Once I became a better shooter and receptive to the fact that it was me, I gave it another try. I was ULTRA SLOW with a red dot.

Now that I truly understand how to use them and have had thousands of reps and thousands of rounds like I have with irons, I’m just as fast from a Holstered/ready up position, and faster with a dot in transitioning targets.

It isn’t a magic portal that makes you fast and accurate. You have to put in the work just like anything else shooting related.

Also if you are doing night shooting, it’s a no brainer.
