I admit I have done a couple of those things, they worked quite well too.
Used to put a couple box fans in the window in the hot end of the home blowing out and put a couple in the shaded end blowing in and do without AC. Now I have a whole house fan and have run the AC twice this year for about 6 hours total. (different home)
