Good morning, all.

I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong forum. If I have, I apologize, and ask that a moderator please move this thread.

I have never owned an NFA item, but, being a rather rabid shotgun fan, I am contemplating picking up a police trade-in 870, and replacing the 18" barrel with a 14" barrel. This may sound odd, but I'd like to be able to retain the ability to fire slugs, if at all possible. I cannot find a 14" with an open choke, however. I have fired slugs in the past only through open chokes, so my choke ignorance is pretty significant. Might someone be able to tell me what chokes other than open, if any, can safely handle slugs? I have found a few 14" online with fixed modified and rifle sights, which are very appealing.

Thank you for any direction you folks can offer.

Take care, and have a great day.

Aaron

You can safely fire Foster-type slugs from an improved cylinder, or modified choked barrel, as this type projectile has an open base, which will allow for some compression, without damaging the barrel. Are you planning on leaving the full buttstock in place? Seems like a lot of $/trouble just for -4".

The new Model 870 Tac-14. Not an NFA item. Not exactly what you were asking but it is way cheaper and easier.

Thank you much, Kahrnut.

The stock and forend will be changed to Magpul so I can achieve a shorter LOP, and run a sling with QD points. This shotgun will be for home defense, and, if my measurements are correct, a long gun I can fit in the trunk of my trike for when I am travelling in state. In regards to the trike, I'm also looking at the Steyr AUG and the Lithgow Atrax, provided the Atrax becomes a reality. Since I am most familiar with shotguns, I'd prefer it when in state. Due to the hassle of gaining permission to transport the SBS across state lines, however, the bullpup would be the better option. I hope I'm not giving the impression I seek trouble; I just like to have something more than my sidearm should something catastrophic occur.

I like the looks of the Tac, TREYM, but I prefer having a buttstock. To add the buttstock, I'm in NFA territory again, and I prefer the older 870s. I'm not a snob, I swear, but I do love those old Police models that already have a bit of wear and tear on them. :)

I have an SBS Rem870 with the factory 14" Modified choke barrel. Shoots slugs just fine, I've shot hundreds of slugs of various design, weight, and velocity out of mine over the years.

It's designed as a barrel for LE, they wouldn't design it where they couldn't shoot slugs out of it.

Thank you very much, cmshoot. I was hoping someone with an SBS would chime in.

I suspect such since they are LE/MIL intended, but I wanted to make sure.

Question for you, cmshoot, if you don't mind. I decided to ask here as it may help other folks.

I have yet to submit my Form 1, but I found a gentleman on Gunbroker with 14" LE trade-in barrels. Might you know if it's legal to purchase and possess the barrel, provided it is not attached to the receiver? I e-mailed the ATF, but haven't yet received a reply.
