Remington 870 Police SBS barrel question

Question for you, cmshoot, if you don't mind. I decided to ask here as it may help other folks.

I have yet to submit my Form 1, but I found a gentleman on Gunbroker with 14" LE trade-in barrels. Might you know if it's legal to purchase and possess the barrel, provided it is not attached to the receiver? I e-mailed the ATF, but haven't yet received a reply.

It's legal, but if you've got an 870 in the house it will fit on, I wouldn't do it. The ATF has absolutely no sense of humor.

What he said. ATF likes to take the position that if you have the parts to assemble a NFA item, then you have an NFA item.

Personally I would never create the risk. If you want to buy the barrel while it is available, keep it off site until you get your form approved.

It's a question of how much money are you willing to spend to prove you are legal?

This morning, however, I received a reply from a gentleman with the ATF: "It is permissible to possess the short barrel as long as it is stored separately." Short, sweet, and to the point. With that reply in my favor, I'm going to grab a barrel, and store it at Dad's where there are no 870s

I have seen this discussion before among a small group that converts double barrel shotguns to double barrel rifle. One method is to cut off the shotgun barrels, and use the stubs for a sleeve to the rifle barrels. Obviously, for a while you have a very short barreled shotgun.

The accepted wisdom is unless you can get the barrels cut and the new barrels permanently attached in one day, store the action off site. I don't know that any one has ever gotten arrested in this scenario, but I do know that the people who do this on a regular basis believe it enough to follow this practice.

I think you will be a lot more comfortable taking the prudent path.

I feel much better with written word from an ATF representative with his signature on the e-mail. I've heard of folks doing what I will be doing, regarding keeping the components separate, but I feel much better having something solid from the agency that can make a firearm owner's life quite unpleasant.
