Rethinking the AR/AK for defense only

Just know that ARs chambered in .223/5.56 indoors are more disruptive than concussion grenades; especially if there's sustained fire and from shorter barrels. Suppressors mitigate this greatly. That being said, ain't nothing like good old 870 with some 00 buck for the house.

Shotgun if you live close to people. I keep a shotgun and pistol handy. I’m paranoid of hitting a neighbor. My house is brick, but I don’t want to take a chance of killing or wounding my neighbors from bullet travel. Could be I’m paranoid and it could never happen, but I don’t think an intruder would stick around after a couple indoor shotgun blasts. Just my thinking….

Bear with me here. I am not an AR guy. If I got to plink I grab a 10/22, RA Rimfire, 9mm problem solver….. I reload and shoot “hunting rifles” for fun. I always hunt a light trim sporter bolt action or single shot. I hate hunting with an AR, my preference only so no cursing or flinging poop.

Hit me with recommendations for a repel boarders and invaders only AR or AK variant. Should I stick with 5.56 or go up? What optics? Can’t be too heavy as I do have some physical limitations. Should I scrap it and go with my 870 ghost maker?
I like AKs best even though I know ARs are more user friendly. My Zastava M70 would be what I would grab in a defense situation...as long as I didn't have to carry it or hold it up too long. Yeah it's heavy.
These days you have more choices. You might even consider a PCC chambered in 10mm. As for the 870 well yeah if the **** has long since hit the fan and you need up close devastation that WOULD be good one. Lots of variables to consider.

Got that covered. Proven soul snatcher for the last 31 years.

Late to thread. Repelling borders is about keeping the enemy at a distance, sprinkle in a little "spray and pray" depending on how many enemies. Don't know the landscape, so basing this on several assumptions.. But I'd want an AR for the accuracy/range over an AK. Weight is a consideration, immediately eliminates AR10 from consideration. I'd build myself a quality 5.56, with a bipod, a nice 1x8 LVPO and some 45-degree irons.

6.8 SPC ll, 14.5 inch job. Stock up on ammo. It's has the same kenetic energy at 150-200 yards than the 5.56 at the muzzle. Good out to 400 yards and you can hunt with it if need be and kill humanly. Unlike the 5.56 the 6.8 didn't suffer high velocity loss with the short barrel. It was designed that way. My second choice would be 300 Blackout. Ammo is about .67 cents per round at PSA. However, the 5.56 would have tons of ammo support and all that just because the popularity of the caliber. In a SHTF scenario the 5.56 would be easier to scrounge up parts and ammo . Since you reload you can Starline brass ( plenty good for defense ) with primers for a good price. With the 6.8 use 28 to 29 grains of 8208 XBR under a 100 to 110 grain pill and it'll shoot like a dream. Or use an 85 grain bullet and you can achieve velocities of 3,000 ft per second.
