Retired F-16's being converted to drones

Interesting, it was only a matter of time. Understanding the impact on warfare and use of these remotely operated destructive forces will shape our planet for better or worse.

Drones...to be shot down by fighter pilot grads. They have been doing this with F-4's for years, next logical step is the lawn darts.

True. However when you hit a F-4 with a AAMRAM and a lot of them can come home, get a new wing, get put back in the air.

Dunno if you can say the same about the lawn dart!

I don't know what folks are surprised about.

They have been turning ex-fighters into target drones controlled from the ground for at least 40 years or more.

First picture of a remotely piloted airplane I ever saw was taken in the 1930s.

yup, not shocked.
advantages include, but are not limited to increased maneuverability, and performance as air-frames now outperform human frames.

10 Gs put a HUGE Strain on a pilot
not so much on modern aircraft

Anyone interested in drone technology should read up on these things:

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2013/07...avy-lands-unmanned-drone-on-aircraft-carrier/

(The big difference is that these drone were designed from the ground up to do what they do. The G-tolerances are much higher than any regular fighter (which has to keep a human alive.)

In a decade or two, I predict that we will see very few manned fighters. They won't be used in direct combat against enemy drones. Probably more as observation and control vehicles. But the days of humans battling it out against each other in the air are rapidly drawing to a close. Manned fighters will go the way of the Model T.

These things can out turn any human-manned machine. And as fighter guys say "if you can turn inside it-you can kill it."

Aero combat is gonna change drastically. Soon.
