Revised opinion of Gun Site Hills shooting range.

The owner of a lgs told me a story about that guy. He competes in 1000+ yard matches and went to gunsight to check it out, wanting to find a place closer to train and practice. He said as he was laying prone, about to shoot, the owner come from behind him and snatched his rifle off the mat and started yelling at him.he started yelling back, said he still doesn't understand what that his problem was, and said he left without ever taking a shot.

Sounded like a crazy story, want sure I believe it when he told it to me.

Thanks for the info guys. I think we are just going to use the same bean fields we are planning to hunt to get our come ups. Now all I have to do is find a good quality portable bench. We'll have to move the bench to get the different ranges. We can't shoot prone because the beans are too high.

i saw a sign for a 1000yd range between the state line and Greenville, SC. it was dark on my way back in or i would have gotten the info. maybe google can help

There are a couple of 1000 yard ranges around, but I need to get my come ups for a variety of distances. Where we will be hunting we could have deer step out anywhere from point blank range all the way to 1400 yards. Of course we won't be shooting that far, but if the conditions are right, 800 or maybe even 900 yards is not out of the question.

I've got good ballistics calculations on both rifles we will be using, but I never trust them completely and need to shoot to confirm trajectory. This is especially true because we are both shooting Barnes bullets. They do a weird BC calculation. They use the G1 standard, which the bullet doesn't quite match, but they calculate it at 300 yards to try and mitigate that. I wish they would just give a G5, which the bullet matches very well, but too many people would see the lower number and not understand it's a different calculation, thus they would think the BC on Barnes bullets is terrible.

They could also do a normal G1 calculation and then it would be easy to convert to G5, but the way they do it now makes that impossible. Hell, the bullet that I'm personally shooting, the LRX, is actually very close to a G7 design.

To many variables to trust the calculations. Got to make the shots to know.

Before now Mike (Chief) has always been a little eccentric, but reasonable and with a great sense of humor. I liked him a lot. What I got today was just mean and a big chip on his shoulder. The real killer is that at one time, several years ago, we got along so well that he made me a range officer there. I literally "Got the T-Shirt". LOL! Today was like I had pissed him off somehow in the past and I'm sure I have not.

Shoulda beat his ass and knocked that chip off his shoulder. His range is 10 minutes from my house and I'll most likely never shoot on it. Heard the rumors, don't wanna visit the Grey Bar Hotel because we have differing "opinions".......

You need something like this.

I hope I find something. There are 1000 yard ranges available, but they don't have the intermediate ranges I need to get the come ups. What really sucks is that I have recently gotten a competition rifle and worked up a load specifically to get back into competition. Something I have long wanted to do, but have not had time for before now. My home range for that was going to be Gun Site Hills, but I'll never darken it's doorstep again after this morning.

Are there any members of River Bend Gun Club on here? They have a six hundred yard range and a good reputation, but I think you have to be sponsored by another member to join.

They have a 2 year waiting list and ain't cheap!!!

Excellent range layout, people are no-nonsense as they should be, but not rude...like some others seem to be.
However I have no knowledge of any 2 yr wait.
