New AC System Regulations | Del-Air Blog

The new AC policy involves a nationwide shift from high-Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, like R-410A, to lower-GWP options such as R-454B and R-32, beginning January 1, 2025, to reduce environmental impact. New systems will also require improved safety features and higher efficiency ratings (SEER2), which may increase costs. While there's no requirement to replace existing AC units, homeowners should be aware of these changes when purchasing new equipment, planning for potentially higher costs, and considering the long-term benefits of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Key Changes
  • Refrigerant Phase-Out:
The most significant change is the mandated transition away from R-410A, a refrigerant with high Global Warming Potential, to newer, environmentally friendlier options.

  • New Refrigerants:
The primary replacements are R-454B and R-32, both of which have significantly lower GWPs than R-410A.

  • Increased Safety Features:
Because these new refrigerants are mildly flammable, new AC systems will include enhanced safety features, such as improved leak detection and flame arrestors.

  • Higher Efficiency Standards:
New regulations also introduced updated energy efficiency ratings, including SEER2 for air conditioners and EER2 for cooling performance.

  • Regional Efficiency Requirements:
While new units must be SEER2 compliant everywhere, the required SEER2 rating differs between regions, with higher standards in the South and Southwest.
What it Means for Homeowners
  • Higher Costs:
Be prepared for increased costs for new AC units due to the new refrigerants, enhanced safety features, and higher energy efficiency standards.

  • No Mandatory Replacement:
There is no legal requirement to replace your current air conditioner. Repairs on existing systems can still be done.

  • Long-Term Benefits:
Investing in a new, energy-efficient system with the latest refrigerants offers a lower carbon footprint and future-proofs your home.

  • Budgeting for a New Unit:
If your system is old, you may want to consider replacing it before 2025 to potentially save money and avoid higher costs later.

Next Steps
  • Check Your System's Efficiency:
Look for the yellow EnergyGuide label on your unit to find its SEER rating.

  • Plan for Upgrades:
When your AC needs a replacement, choose a model with the new refrigerants and higher SEER2 rating to meet current and future regulations.

  • Look for Rebates:
Explore available rebates and incentives to help offset the cost of an upgrade.

  • Consult a Professional:
Contact a qualified HVAC contractor to help you navigate these changes and ensure your new system is compliant and efficient.

  • Prepare for 2025 AC Price Hikes Due to New EPA Rules

The whole deal is a BS scam by Dupont, With my current ac central being 12 years old I bought a complete outside unit and the coils for the inside unit from my AC friend. Old gas will still be available but the new gas is twice as much plus highly flammable and deadly if it leaks into you home. How ever you look at it were screwed by the government and Dupont.

The new gas is an A2L vs A1 that is R410a. It is not highly flammable. It's considerably less flammable than the LP or natural gas many folks have running to their appliances. Neither one is good to be huffing but it is not deadly if there happened to be a leak.
