Hello all,

thinking of setting up a rimfire practice rifle

Possible choice as base rifle would be Savage B17 FV-SR

Max distance shot will be 100 to 200 yards - paper and steel targets

Questions:

1. What scope would be appropriate for this at a 200 dollar budget

2. Are there any aftermarket stock options for this model at this point

3. Opinions on the savage itself, all I have read and researched for it are good reviews.

You listed it as a practice rifle, are you wanting something that simulates centerfire type shooting? Are you married to the 17 caliber? Will you be shooting at varying distances of targets or mostly 100 or 200 yards?

Will be shooting from 0 to 200 yards with varying distances between those yardage points

Open to other rimfire calibers - what would you suggest

more of a practice/fun rifle to have at the range to work on fundamentals and such

Just get a .22. Cheaper ammo and does fine at those distances. Really makes you focus on fundamentals. There are stocks from boyds to manners and chassis from mcrees and others.

Go 22lr for up to 200 yds. You can get good match ammo for less than cheap 17 or 22 mag ammo. You will also get to learn wind better :). Look at the CZ 452/455 varients. The CZ 455 Varmint Tacticool comes with a heavy threaded barrel and Boyds stock. Some folks love their Savage rimfires, mostly because they are cheap. The mags suck and you will need to get a new stock (most people go Boyds, same as the stock that comes on the Varmint Tacticool) and then you need to further bed the rifle.

Going with the savage due to budget constraints at this time. The CZ 455 looks like a great gun. The b22 rifle uses a newer magazine ( rotary mag) compared to the 93r version

Optic wise I put a Steiner 3-15 T5xi on my primary rifle, for now I can't buy another one for a while - any suggestions on another option - budget friendly?
