My sister in law came to me asking for a good gun idea to get my brother for Christmas and her budget was $500. since he has been drooling over my sr1911 i started looking around. being as her budget is on the low side for a quality 1911, I did a little research and found that the rock island actually seems pretty good for a low end 1911. He probably will shoot it a good bit, but he wont be using it as a carry gun. Anyone have experience with their 1911s?

Cant beat this deal with a stick. Even if he is a nurse ;) http://www.theoutdoorstrader.com/threads/814990-FS-SR1911-SS-Commander-LNIB-w-VZ-grips-SIX-HUNDRED-DOLLARS

Got the 3.5" as an EDC.

Can't go wrong with RIA...they have been making 1911's for a very long time...

Good solid guns. Not a Kimber or Nighthawk but a excellent starter 1911. Once he shoots it he will get the dreaded 1911 bug. Next thing you know he will have 1911's everywhere. True story.

I echo the others thoughts on the RIA.
I have the tactical II and a tactical and both are very well made, the tactical II is actually much better than quite good!
I would suggest that unless the Brother wants a G I Joe 1911 (stripped in other words) that you go with a tactical.
It comes with vent trigger, commander speed hammer, both front and rear sight in dovetails, and Novak type sights, ambi safety, lowered and flared ejection port, beavertail grip safety.
The G I Joe model comes with----A magazine!! and that's about it.
the price difference really isn't hat much different in the tactical either over the G I Model.
You might also want to take a serious look at Para USA, they are on sale and have a rebate right now and they should be well in your price range right now.
