What i up with rugby-style punts?

I must admit that although I like football, I am no expert on its nuances.

Anyone know whether there is some real advantage to kicking it like that-or whether it is another useless fad-like barefoot kickers?

The rugby punt is a stunt performed by sub standard special teams units. It rolls the punter out from behind the line and allows him to angle the kick away from the receiving team's return man. It also allows a read option for the punter. If the receiving team does not cover the tight end, the punter can pass for a first down or if the receiving team does not account for the punter, he can run for it.

They like rugby punters because of the backspin it puts on the ball. Instead of rolling towards the endzone, it will roll the other direction. Better chance of burying an opponent.

Interesting.

Maybe there is more logic to it than I thought.

At least they ain't doing that idiotic barefoot thing!
