Good Morning,

I was hoping to solicit some recommendations or feedback/experiences on an optic for my 10/22 Charger (8" Bbl) - See pic above.

I tossed on a romeo5 because it's what I had on hand, but the primary purpose of the gun is to commit genocide against the chipmunk population in my yard. I'm usually using CCI CB's or CCI Quiet Segmented HPs to be considerate of my neighbors and for safety purposes (I don't want to use full power .22's). Most of my shots are taken under 50 feet, and some out to 75 feet or so. I take the occasional hail-mary shot at 100 feet when taunted by the little bastards.

The red dot doesn't exactly lend itself well to precision.

I'm looking at a Sig Juliet 3x or 4x magnifier, or a Vortex Diamondback 2-7x35 scope. Any opinions on which I should go with? Are there any other decent options?

Most of my experience with rifle scopes is at 100-600 yards with much larger calibers. Is there any valid concern about parallax at the close ranges I'd be using it at?

Thank you for your input.

I don’t have one yet but I’m in the market for one.
I would personally go the LPVO route with it over either of those options.
I have red dot/magnifier combos on a couple AR’s and they are bulky. I think it would be awkward on something that small.
The LPVO would allow you to have a red dot at 1x or a rifle scope at 4-8x in the same package.

Hmm. I'd kinda discarded LPVOs as an option mostly due to the price point ($500-$1k on an optic for a .22 seems a bit much), and the parallax on most of them that are sub $1k are set at 100 yards.

I'm also not a huge fan of the Strike Eagle reticles for pin-point precision (the crosshairs are thicker than the gap between Condoleezza Rice's front teeth). A chevron like on the ACSS reticles might be decent, I suppose.

To be honest, I don't have enough experience or knowledge to know what kind of effect that parallax would really have at the super close distances I'm shooting at (or if it could be mitigated by lowering the magnification... which would defeat the purpose a bit).

Did you have a specific LPVO in mind?

I’ve had a Vortex Strike Eagle on my Ruger SFAR10 for the past two years.
I’ve shot stuff as close 10 yards and as far away as 200 with no issues.
I’ve run drills with it up close and have never had an issue with parallax.
I also have an Sig Tango MSR 1-8 and a Burris 1-8.
They’re all less than $400 and have worked fine for me.

Got these two last week, both between 20-50 yards.
Head shots, personally I don’t think the thickness of the crosshairs is going to matter much.
I honestly feel like I shoot an LPVO more accurately than I do traditional crosshairs at this point.

Thanks!!

Guess I have a lot more options to look at now. =D

I'm probably a little particular on the reticle because most of my rifle shooting is just for fun off a bench where I'm trying to make the tiniest groups possible at distance. Can't say I've done much running and gunning with a rifle.

Ahh totally understandable.
Seldom do I get a shot farther than 50 yards where I hunt so I train how I hunt.
I like the reticle because it lets me get on target quicker than traditional crosshairs.
When I was a teenager I had a Bushnell Firefly Elite 3-9x40 with the thicker illuminated crosshairs and I loved it.
I unfortunately dropped and broke it getting it out of the truck several years ago and it’s been discontinued I’m pretty sure.
It was lightweight and would’ve been great for a charger build.

If the dot appears crisp to your eye, I suggest sighting in such that it prints the group just above the top edge of the dot. Then you can shoot by setting whatever you want to hit atop the dot for greater precision than covering the target with the dot.

The other thing to consider is height over bore. Having your sight as close to the bore as possible will minimize vertical dispersion at close range as well as horizontal due to canting.
