So everything I see says it is okay to shoot in the Chattahochee National Forest as long as you follow the rules here www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/conf/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5127611&width=full. Does this mean I can hike some trails, step off the trail into an area with a good backstop, set up some targets, and fire away? Of course I'll leave everything as I found it (with a few extra holes and maybe a little bit of lead). Are there some areas in the Narional Forest that you can't do this? Or are there state laws that restrict you from doing this? Got my first 1911 and can't wait to camp and try it out.

I have been busted by a warden for "possession of illegal firearms outside of hunting season". We were with a group of 5 or 6 with many different firearms and calibers, long guns and pistols. I was with a group of long hairs and hippies between the ages of 18 and 22ish and knew for sure we were going to get harassed. I was polite and responsible with unloading and safety of said firearms so he was cool about it and let us off with a written warning. He may have stayed to mess with us longer but he had to go write citations for some ATVs off in the distance. So IDK if all that would stick in court but i wont be back for pinking any time soon.

In NY it was kosher to shoot on state land as long as you were WAY off the beaten path, knew your backstop, and weren't out during hunting season. Durring hunting season if caught without license or with an inappropriate firearm you would get a ticket. They also frown upon you putting holes in trees that could potentially kill them so bring something to put your targets up with and don't just shoot a tree down ;)
