Shooting steel targets

Shoot em but do wear a good set of shooting glasses. I shoot mine all the time in the backyard with 22,9,45. Most of the time the round does go into the ground at the base of the target but I have some come back toward me.

I picked up my first steel targets today. I'm going to do some reading about it before I take them out, but any words from experience would be greatly appreciated. I have .22, .22 mag, 9mm , .45, .308, 5.56 calibers I could possibly use. 6" and 8" plates.

Pistol rounds will do minimal damage, but rifle rounds could cause serious damage unless the targets are hardened Steel.
Now, IF they are hardened steel, be very leery of "Bounce Backs" as they can be painful !
Yes ! Experience talking here !

Ouchy !

I also suggest "Minimum Range" limitations for STEEL Targets ...
Handgun, "Minimum Limit of 25 yards"
Rifle, "Minimum Limit of 100 yards"

Yeah, I also did some 'Elmer Keith' shootin. Beer cans at 125 yards, usually got at least, 4 out of five with a S&W Mod 60 S.S. Chief's Special, 1 3/4 BBl.
I dint have a 600 yard range, so I scaled things down.
S&W is On my desk now.
My Son an ODT Member can verify this !
As he watched it !

Elmer Keith was one of my favorite Gun Scribes, along with Bill Jordan, and Skeeter Skelton !

I do miss them !

You'll be fine if you're not too close. You will feel a little sprayback once in a while but wear glasses and you'll be okay.

Where was that picture taken? It looks like someplace I want to go.

I have super heavy steel targets at 50m & 75M, pallets w/paper targets at 25m & 100m, never had a problem, but I would not get closer 35m with the steel targets

I'm wondering if I even want to shoot at them now!

What will help is the angle of the plates. The holders you have make the plates face you directly which is suboptimal. The Chambliss welding guy said he used to make those and had problems with ricochets from the hangars.
A better solution would be to use a 2-3" bolt to hang the gongs. Use washers, but use a nylon locking nut at the back. The weight of the gong will cause the chain to ride to the back of the bolt up against the nut and away from gong. Hanging in this position will cause the gong to face slightly down in it's resting position.

Kinda like this, but even further back on the bolt:

I've has several pieces of jacket bounce back. Always tiny. Feels like a spitball. Just wear eyes and you will be fine.

Quit worrying man. Most pistol rounds are low enough velocity that even if something bounces back it isn't gonna do anything. I would keep it at least 50 yds for rifle. Never had anything come back from rifles, but I have put a few holes in my steel shooting too close.

That's my back yard. I wouldn't of moved close in if I didn't have some green space(fishing).
